Autism care
Mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a possible complementary method in the care of people living with autism spectrum disorder.

A complementary option, not a cure
Autism spectrum disorder is a complex neurological condition that can present challenges in the areas of social relationships, communication and sensory processing as well. In recent years mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy (mHBOT) has come into focus as a possible complementary method – alongside the usual developmental programmes and medical care, not instead of them.
It is important to be clear: mHBOT does not cure autism and it does not replace medical care, development or therapy programmes. The results of the relevant research are mixed, so purchasing and using a cabin should always be considered as a complement, and only in consultation with the treating doctor.
HOW IT WORKS?
What happens during the treatment

Mild overpressure
The pressure in the cabin is slightly above atmospheric pressure.

More dissolved oxygen
At increased pressure more oxygen can dissolve in the blood plasma.

Supported circulation
The treatment may also affect blood flow in the tissues.

A gentle treatment
A non-invasive, pain-free, passive treatment.

A calm environment
In quiet, predictable conditions, even at home.
WHAT DO WE WORK WITH?
The device and the route to it
mHBOT cabins
The user stays in an enclosed cabin where they breathe oxygen-enriched air at a pressure slightly above atmospheric pressure. The treatment is passive, non-invasive and painless; the cabin can also be installed in a home environment.
Consultation and discussion
Before buying it is worth discussing your state of health, any contraindications and your expectations. We recommend starting to use it only after consulting your treating doctor.

What does the research say?
The role of mHBOT in autism has been analysed in several studies, but the results are mixed: some described favourable changes, other studies found no clear difference. On the basis of our current knowledge the method is experimental and complementary in nature.
- A non-invasive, pain-free treatment
- Can be fitted alongside the usual developmental programmes
- Subject to prior medical consultation
- Results vary from person to person
- It does not replace specialist care
WHO DO WE RECOMMEND IT FOR?
With realistic expectations

For families
Who are looking into complementary options.

For adults
Who are looking for complementary methods themselves.

For institutions
Those who would expand their equipment in consultation with specialists.

For those seeking information
Who want a realistic picture of the options.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Frequently asked questions
Does mHBOT cure autism?
No. Autism spectrum disorder cannot be cured by this method. mHBOT can at most be a complementary option alongside the usual care and development programmes.
What does the research show?
The results are mixed. Some studies reported favourable changes, others found no clear difference. The method should therefore be approached with realistic expectations.
What is the treatment like?
The treatment is passive: the user rests in an enclosed cabin while the pressure rises slowly. It is not painful, but equalising the pressure in the ears may feel unfamiliar - it is worth preparing for this in advance.
Can children use it too?
Only in consultation with the treating physician, on an individual basis. The first step is always a personal consultation.
Are there any contraindications?
Yes. The treatment is not recommended in cases of untreated pneumothorax, ear and sinus problems, severe COPD, inadequately controlled epilepsy, fever or pregnancy. You will find the detailed list on the oxygen therapy page and in the FAQ.
