Mild oxygen therapy in the treatment of dementia and ADHD
Mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy (mHBOT) is receiving increasing attention in the treatment of neurological disorders such as dementia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This therapy is a modified version of traditional hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), which works at lower pressures and often lower oxygen concentrations. In mHBOT, patients usually breathe oxygen-enriched air at a pressure of 1.3-1.5 atmospheres, compared to the 2.0-4 atmospheres of conventional HBOT.
The theoretical basis of mHBOT
The aim of mHBOT is to improve the oxygen supply to the body through increased pressure and oxygen concentration. The increased pressure causes the lungs to take up oxygen more efficiently, which increases the oxygen content in the blood. This higher oxygen level can promote tissue regeneration and reduce inflammation.
The impact of oxygen therapy on dementia
Dementia is an umbrella term that covers many neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. These conditions are characterised by the progressive death of brain cells and deterioration of brain function.
The use of mHBOT in the treatment of dementia is based on the theory that increased oxygen levels can improve blood flow to the brain and reduce brain inflammation, thereby slowing or even halting neurodegenerative processes. Some research suggests that hyperbaric oxygen therapy can stimulate the formation of new capillaries and the regeneration of nerve cells, which may contribute to improved cognitive function.
The effect of oxygen therapy on ADHD
ADHD is a neuropsychiatric disorder associated with attention deficit, hyperactivity and impulsivity. The use of mHBOT in ADHD is based on the idea that increased oxygen levels can improve brain metabolism and neurotransmitter balance, which can contribute to improved attention and concentration, as well as reduced hyperactivity and impulsivity.
Scientific research and results
Although the use of mHBOT in dementia and ADHD is promising, there is not yet consensus in the scientific community on its effectiveness. Further, larger-scale and well-designed clinical trials are needed to determine to what extent and under what circumstances mHBOT may provide real benefits in these conditions.
However, before using it, it is important to consult a specialist and take into account current research. Further testing of the efficacy and safety of the therapy is necessary before widespread use.
